WALK along Emsworth shore path – no paddling in future? NEW PROJECT - 2025
If you are a regular walker along the shore of Emsworth
westwards to Nore Barn Woods you may have had to paddle,
wade or turn back at some high tides.
If you want to know
about planned path changes there, there is an ERF meeting
at the Emsworth Community Centre on Thursday January 30th
at 7pm.
(The Community Centre is behind the fire station in North
Street.) An expert from Hampshire CC will outline the
changes all round Chichester Harbour paths, especially the
section along Emsworth’s shore to the west.
This new local project is designed to reduce the effects of
flooding along there by adding a new board walk to
the shore path at the end of Warblington Road and
improving the bridge over Nore stream.
This is just a part of the national Natural England
(NE) project – King Charles III Coast Path.
The Emsworth section is due to be carried out,
probably in mid-2025. It is paid for by Government funding.
Drawings of the boardwalk and planned path improvements etc
can be found on
www.maisemoregardens.co.uk
When the work goes ahead, led by Hampshire County Council,
it is likely there will be some brief path closures at
times.
Information about this will be posted as near the site as
possible and online at
www.hants.gov.uk/community/publications?typeid=7
(but this
link
only works nearer the time of the project.)
Dry walk west along Emsworth shore – new project details
This planned new boardwalk is planned to start at the same
height as the existing raised path.
Where this currently slopes down, (where the large
puddle forms sometimes), the boardwalk will be connected on
and be about a metre above the beach. It will go
horizontally until it goes into the beach shingle about 35
metres further west.
There is discussion about whether the new boardwalk
should have railings. (Those who swim regularly there would
prefer the path to match the existing raised path – with
no railings so people can sit along there after
swimming).
If you carry on walking west to the bridge, there are plans
for a newly surfaced hoggin approach path with gabions
either side (not very high ones). The bridge itself will be
strengthened and lifted and railings added.
The hoggin path will continue on the other side of
the bridge. To the
left of it, as you look towards the sea, there are plans for
a protected area to encourage the regrowth of natural
vegetation. (All this engineering work outlined means
temporary path closure at times during construction,)
Those who walk along here regularly will find such closures
a real nuisance – but it is hoped that the work will lead to
a safer (and drier) route for all users, local or not, high
tide or not in 2026 onwards,
