Exciting new Explorer Unit for Emsworth! An 0ut-of-this-world year for Principia Explorers
Opening due to popular demand, Principia Explorers is named
after astronaut & Scout Ambassadors Tim Peake’s mission to
the International Space Station. Who honoured the group by
providing a video message for their opening ceremony &
taking their neckerchiefs to space with him.
Meeting on Tuesday evenings in Westbourne. The Explorers
(boys & girls aged 14-17) have been Go Karting, Air Rifle
Shooting, Pioneering, Indoor Bouldering, Crazy Golf, Night
Navigation and much more! They have even taken part in a
weeklong Residential full of activities in the Brecon
Beacons. Explorer Guy describes how “campfire cooking always
brings the group close and you can interact with everyone.”
“Where possible, we always try to run the activities in a
way that develops individual resilience, teamwork and
leadership.” -Group Leader Jim.
Each Scout group is run by an inspirational and enthusiastic
team of volunteers. Without them young people would not get
to experience all these brilliant opportunities. Jim
explains “while some may believe that running an evening
with 14 - 18-year-olds after a hard day’s work would be a
chore, in my experience I find I am exhilarated to see their
smiles and witness them develop on their journey to
adulthood and this refreshes me more than a night in front
of the tele. “
Alongside amazing adventures & challenges, the Explorers
have been given the opportunity to develop many Skills for
Life. An important motto for the Scouts.
Jon “enjoyed the pioneering and axe work because they
were very outdoorsy and physical activities with a practical
application.” Map reading, First Aid (including for
animals), sewing and changing a car tyre are also skills
that the Scouts are keen to give to young people.
“It is extremely satisfying to plan and deliver an activity
that they both enjoy and increases their skills.
In a world where young people live most of their time
online, getting them interacting with one another and
engaged in activities as varied as sewing and night
navigation in the rain benefits them and me immensely. “
“Young people need Scouts - Adults need Scouts too.”
