Wednesday 15th January
Operation Overlord: Great Plans and Big Egos.
Talk by Lord Richards of Herstmonceux 7.30 pm Operation
OVERLORD was the biggest amphibious operation in history. It
took years of almost faultless planning and preparation. Yet
it was a close run thing, in part because of the oversize
egos and rivalries of the politicians and generals involved,
on both the Allied and Axis sides. Underpinned by a campaign
narrative that culminates in the fall of Paris, this
revealing talk also examines the conduct and motives of the
characters in whose hands our destiny lay. Talks
are held at the Mountford Rooms. Emsworth Community Centre.
North Street. Emsworth PO10 7DD Tickets are

Monday 20th January Social
coordination in great apes and human children
Dr Sophie Milward, Lecturer, Dept
Psychology, Portsmouth University
Science Discovery Group Held
on the 3rd Monday of the
month, 7.30 - 9.15 at
Emsworth Community Centre £3pp on the door. Humans
are known for being highly social beings, able to cooperate
and coordinate in complex ways and on huge scales.
This is one of the skills that has been argued to make us
unique, and explain our sophisticated cultures and
techonologies, which in turn have made us the dominant
species on this planet. However, many other species
show collaborative and coordination abilities to some
extent. I will present evidence from evolutionary and
developmental psychology experiments with human children and
our closest living relatives, the great apes, to demonstrate
the ways in which we are similar, but also different from
our evolutionary cousins. For more information Email:

in poetry and images Talk by Denise
Bennett 7.30 pm The Royal George sank at Spithead on the
29th August 1782 with the loss of around 1,000 lives
including 60 children. It was being ‘heeled’ for repairs to
the water cock and also loaded with provisions when it began
to take in water. The carpenter raised the alarm and spoke
to the Lieutenant on duty twice but was ignored. If his
warning had been heeded, the tragedy might have been
averted. Talks are held at the Mountford Rooms. Emsworth

Saturday 29th August - Sunday 27th September
Thomas a Becket: the Man and the Church
2020 is the 850th anniversary of the martyrdom in 1170 of
St. Thomas a Becket, Archbishop of Canterbury. His death was
a dramatic episode in the long struggle from the late 11th
Century to the early 14th century between the universal
church under papal leadership and the feudal monarchies
which were to develop into the nation-states of Europe.
Saturday This exhibition explores the turbulent life and
death of the man that the church in Warblington is dedicated
to, the 1,000 year history of the church, its building and
treasures and the people who have influenced it from early
Norman times up to the present day. Emsworth Museum is
open on Saturdays and Bank Holiday Monday (August 31st)
