Emsworth Car Parking Charges set to Rise

Car parking charges throughout the borough will be increased next month.  Once again the council has failed to recognise the impact that these rise have on local businesses, residents and visitors alike.

Increased car parking charges in Emsworth, and other areas of Havant Borough, are damaging to business and to our local community. They exacerbate the problems of parking around local streets, motorists queuing for on-street parking spots and residents being reluctant to visit Emsworth for leisure and to shop. Ironically, they also tend to reduce the revenue raised as motorists avoid using the car parks. It is noticeable that empty shops have recently become a permanent feature of the town centre and increased parking charges will only exacerbate the problem at a time when local business are facing a host  of other problems such as decreasing footfall in the town centre and Increased rents and overheads.

The increased charges are:

Palmers Road  Increase: Up to one hour, from 80p to 1  Increase: Up to two hours, from 1.50 to 1.90  Change: Up to five hours / 2.50 TO, up to four hours / 3 Change: Over five hours / 3 TO, over four hours /

North Street  Increase: Up to one hour, from 80p to 1  Increase: Up to two hours, from 1.50 to 1.90  Change: Up to five hours / 2.50, TO up to four hours / 3

South Street  Increase: Up to one hour, from 90p to 1  Change: Up to three hours / 1.80, TO up to two hours / 2 Change: Up to four hours / 2.50, TO up to three hours / 2.40  Change: 1 for any stay TO up to four hours / 3.20.

Councillor Narinda Bains, cabinet lead for neighbourhoods, safety and enforcement said new money made will go back into the sites.  She said: ‘The parking charges throughout the borough have not increased in five years, since we last undertook a reviewed in 2013.  Any extra revenue from this review will be put back into the parking service to maintain car parks.’

One visitor to Emsworth said,

' I visit this area at times during the year, and am very unhappy to  learn of  these increased charges. The increases are a great mistake for everyone in this lovely area',

and in the view of a local resident,

'The viability of this small town of Emsworth is at risk when shoppers are dissuaded from coming here because of the high parking charges.'
